A depilatory, more precisely chemical depilatory is a cosmetic preparation, which is used to remove hair form the skin. A common active ingredient used is calcium thioglycolate, which helps to weaken the hair so it is easily scraped off from where it emerges.
As the preparation is also rich in keratin, it may irritate the skin and make it more sensitive if it’s left on for too long. Depilatories are mostly used for the arms and legs. You shouldn’t be using it on the face unless it is specifically listed for that purpose on the product’s label.
Chemical depilatories are available in many forms like in gel, lotion, cream, aerosol, roll-on, and powder forms. Common brands include Nair, Magic Shave and Veet.
Pros And Cons Of Depilatory
Pros: Simple method, completely painless and appropriate for all parts of the body. Depilatory cream almost dissolves hair and at next growth hair are not as hard as after shaving. It can easily be done at comfort of your home. Available over-the-counter.
Cons: The effects only last for a short time. Re-growth of hair appear within 2-5 days. Depilatory creams are not suited for individuals with very sensitive skin. A lot of people are allergic to them, that is why it is smart to do a test beforehand. Creams can have unpleasant smell so you may consider buying new ones with added scent.
Depilatory Tips
First tip would be don’t decide for this method at all as creams contain too much chemicals which have negative effect on your skin and health. If however you insist in using depilatories be careful to use appropriate cream for appropriate part, for example cream for legs is not suitable for facial hair removal. Because of aggressiveness it should not come in contact with mucous membrane.
