Shaving is one of the easiest methods to remove hair. Men most commonly use it to remove facial hair and women usually shave legs and arm pits. This method require shaving cream or gel, razor with fresh blade, and aftershave (liquid, cream). Additional accessories can be used to simplify process like shaving brush and leather.
There are razors with one, two, three and up to four blades for different effects. Using a three or four bladed razor can reduce irritation as shaving is complete with fewer strokes.
Side Effects of Shaving
Shaving can cause many inconveniences like cuts, abrasions, and irritations. Using a fresh blade with plenty of lubrication can help minimizing side effects. Also avoid pressing down with the razor too much. Cuts from shaving can bleed for about fifteen minutes. Cuts are caused by too violent blade movements or shaving over bumps on the skin. To stop bleeding:
- press alcohol onto the cut until bleeding stops
- place a small piece of toilet paper onto the cut
- placing a small amount of petroleum jelly on the cut after bleeding has mostly ended – this will stop the bleeding and prevent scabs from forming on your skin.
Another side effect is razor burn which is irritation of the skin caused by not using a proper technique. It forms a rash few days after shaving due to a growing hair that cannot penetrate trough sealed skin. It lasts for a few hours or days, depending on the severity. Once again, using plenty of lubrication can minimize side effects to appear. Few other things to do to prevent razor burns:
- keep the skin moist, use shaving brush and leather, use moisturizing shaving gel
- always shave in the direction of the hair growth and don’t shave too closely, apply minimal pressure
- do not irritate the skin after shaving by scratching
- try to use products (razors, aftershave cream…) with Aloe Vera or other emollients
Pros and Cons Of Shaving
Pros: Verified fast, simple and cheap method of removing hair. At women it is ideal for legs and arm pits.
Cons: Hairs grow with almost visible speed, each time they appear darker and thicker. Shaving is not recommended for women to remove hair from face and it is completely inappropriate for eyebrow shaping.
Shaving Tips
It is mandatory to use cooling gel or moisturizer after every shaving. Razors with 3 or 4 blades are the best, so you can shave with minimal strokes. Use blade three times mostly and never share it with anyone (your partner as well) to avoid infections. Just a tip: razors for men are designed for 50% thicker hair. Women can shave legs, arm pits and in some cases bikini area (shaping), but the best method for this area is Brazilian depilatory.
